5 Signs Your Gutters Need Replacing Before Winter

By Affordable Roofing & Gutters

Gutters are easy to ignore until they cause a problem, and winter is the worst time for that problem to show up. Before the first hard freeze, it is worth a quick look at your gutters. Here are five signs that your gutters are due for replacement, and why it matters most heading into a Western Pennsylvania winter.

1. They overflow every time it rains

If water pours over the edge of your gutters during a normal rain, something is wrong. The gutters may be clogged, pitched incorrectly, or simply too small for your roof. Overflowing gutters dump water against your foundation and, in winter, contribute to ice buildup at the roof edge. If cleaning them does not fix it, the installation or the sizing is the real problem, and seamless gutters installed correctly are the fix.

2. They sag or pull away from the house

Gutters that sag in the middle or pull away from the fascia are not draining properly and are putting stress on the roof edge. This often comes from loose hangers, the weight of trapped debris and ice, or a rotted fascia board behind the gutter. Sagging gutters will only get worse under winter snow and ice load.

3. You see seams leaking or rust

Old sectional gutters are joined every few feet, and those seams are the first thing to fail. If you see staining, dripping, or rust at the joints, the gutters are near the end. Seamless gutters solve this because they are formed from one continuous piece with no seams along the runs, only at corners and downspouts.

4. There is peeling paint or staining behind the gutters

Peeling paint, water stains, or soft wood on the fascia behind the gutters means water has been getting where it should not. This ties your gutters directly to your soffit and fascia. Failing gutters rot the fascia, and rotted fascia makes the gutters fail faster. It is a cycle worth breaking before winter.

5. They are simply old and tired

If your gutters are decades old, undersized, or were never installed right when the house was built, replacement before winter is smart. New seamless gutters, properly sized and pitched and color matched to your home, handle the heavy runoff from melting snow far better than old worn out gutters. Getting them in before the freeze protects your foundation and your roof edge all winter.

Get ahead of it

The best time to deal with gutters is before they fail under winter load. We can inspect your gutters, tell you honestly whether they need replacing or just correcting, and install seamless gutters that finally drain the way they should. Pairing that with a soffit and fascia check makes sure the whole roof edge is ready for winter.
