Ice Dams and Winter Roof Damage: What Western PA Homeowners Need to Know

By Affordable Roofing & Gutters

Every Western Pennsylvania winter, homeowners discover water stains on their ceilings and wonder how water got in when it was freezing outside. The usual culprit is an ice dam, and it is one of the most common and most preventable causes of winter roof damage in our area. Here is how ice dams form, what they do to your home, and how to keep them from costing you.

What an ice dam actually is

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms along the edge of your roof. It happens when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper part of the roof, the meltwater runs down to the cold eave, and it refreezes there. Over time that ice builds into a dam that traps more meltwater behind it. That trapped water has nowhere to go but under the shingles and into your home.

The damage ice dams cause

The water that backs up under the shingles can soak the roof decking, drip into the insulation, and stain or ruin ceilings and walls. Left unchecked, it leads to rot, mold, and damaged interior finishes. The weight of the ice can also tear gutters loose and damage the fascia. None of it is cheap to fix, which is why prevention matters.

Why attic ventilation and insulation matter

The root cause of most ice dams is a warm attic. When the attic is properly insulated and ventilated, the roof stays closer to the outside temperature, so the snow does not melt and refreeze in that destructive cycle. Good intake ventilation at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge keeps air moving and the roof deck cold. This is one reason your soffit and fascia are more important than most homeowners realize.

The role of ice and water shield

When we install a roof, we put down ice and water shield, a self sealing membrane, in the valleys and along the eaves where ice dams form. It creates a waterproof barrier under the shingles in exactly the spots most likely to see backed up water. A roof installed with proper ice and water shield is far better protected against ice dam leaks than one without it.

Keeping your gutters part of the solution

Clogged or poorly pitched gutters make ice dams worse by holding water and ice at the roof edge. Clean, properly pitched seamless gutters help water drain before it can freeze and build up. If your gutters overflow or sag, they may be contributing to your winter water problems, and correcting them is part of the fix.

What to do if you have an ice dam

If you see an ice dam or water staining inside, do not climb up and start chipping at the ice, which damages the roof. Call a roofer to assess the situation safely. After the season, the long term fix is usually a combination of better attic ventilation and insulation, proper ice and water shield, and a sound roof edge. We can inspect your roof, find the weak points, and recommend the right fix.
