Asphalt Shingles vs Metal Roofing: Which Is Better for a Pittsburgh-Area Home?
By Affordable Roofing & Gutters
When it is time for a new roof, most homeowners in our area are choosing between architectural asphalt shingles and metal roofing. Both are good options, and the right one depends on your home, your budget, and how long you plan to stay. Here is an honest side by side comparison from a roofer who installs both.
Up front cost
Asphalt shingles win on up front cost. They are the most affordable roofing material and the most common choice for area homes, which is why most of the roofs we install are shingle. Metal roofing costs more to buy and install. If your budget is the deciding factor, shingles are usually the answer, and a quality architectural shingle is a genuinely good roof.
Lifespan and long term value
Metal roofing wins on lifespan. A metal roof can last decades longer than asphalt with very little maintenance, so over a long enough time horizon it can be the better value despite the higher up front cost. If you plan to stay in your home for the long haul, the math on metal gets more attractive. If you may move in the medium term, shingles often make more sense.
Handling snow and ice
Metal sheds snow well, which is a real advantage in our winters and especially closer to the mountains around Uniontown. Snow slides off rather than building up, which reduces load and can help with ice dam issues. Shingles hold snow more, though a properly built shingle roof with good ventilation and ice and water shield handles our winters just fine. This is why we see a lot of metal on barns, garages, and pole buildings.
Looks and curb appeal
This one comes down to taste. Architectural shingles give a classic, dimensional look that suits most homes and comes in a wide range of colors. Metal gives a clean, modern, or rustic look depending on the panel, and it is a natural fit for outbuildings and certain home styles. Both can look great. We help you match the material and color to your home.
Maintenance
Metal is the lower maintenance option over its life, with no granule loss and strong resistance to weather. Shingles require a bit more attention over the decades and will eventually show granule loss and wear. Neither is high maintenance if installed correctly, but if hands off is a priority, metal has the edge.
Which should you choose
There is no universal right answer. For most homes on a sensible budget, architectural shingles are the practical, proven choice. For outbuildings, long term ownership, or homeowners who want maximum life and snow shedding, metal is worth the extra cost. The best move is to talk it through with someone who installs both and has no reason to push you one way. That is exactly what we do on our roofing service.
